It seems these days every other person I come across that is "writing a novel" already has the cast picked out for the movie adaptation of the book and the outfit they plan to wear to the premiere neatly set out...ready and waiting...

This is an interesting perpetuation to examine, propagated by J.K. Rowling and Stephenie Meyer's success stories, that now the writing of a novel is seen as a transitory step to blockbuster movies and merchandise deals.

On one hand it is great to see so many people enthused about writing and bringing to life creative new worlds, but juxtapose this to their underlying motivation and it is hard not to at least partially discredit their undertakings. Yet, I think the end product itself will justify this idealization of the writing process, as generally those who are writing these fantastical new novels as a shot at stardom don't always have anything groundbreaking to say, and very well could benefit from a writing workshop or six.

Write to write, write for the love of being creative. Write because you have something to share with the world (that could only be described by you because it has been seen from your unique perspective). If it's well done the people will come.

The NBA and Cliche, Thoughts 1

A preface: I very much enjoy and embrace the idea of Twitter and having a very small amount of words to get across big ideas (at times). I was thinking recently about wanting to write a post regarding pro sports players and following this with a post about the worn out cliche phrases people throw around. I have a tendency to ramble and waste space and words. Thus, I want to regularly lay out my thoughts in a more concise form. And we arrive at "Thoughts".

I find it hard to imagine why NBA players feel they need to carry guns.

NFL players: usually wide receivers, YOUR job is to catch an oval leather ball and run until you are knocked down or cross a line. You will be paid extremely generous amounts of money for this. Your only other task is to become really good at doing the above through strength training and drills. If you can't handle this, there are millions upon millions of other people that very likely would do anything to have this JOB, which is what this is bottom line, a job; then again so is working at a cell phone kiosk in a mall- take your pick.

Words that are tired in songs: love, dream, beach, California, breathe, hold on, summer, nights.

If this were a future world a la Kevin Costner in Water World then you very well might be the proverbial toaster in the water.

A double barrel shotgun tattoo with the script- Buy one get one free.

Girls who are unathletic turn me off.

People who incessantly use movie quotes when speaking to you as part of their own diction, like always answering in the affirmative using "totes" (thanks to Paul Rudd in I Love You, Man) make me less than enthused. Along these lines, people who employ cliche, worn-out phrases such as "I will never drink again" also bother me.

If I were to say no one gets trampled during after holiday sales that'd be a lie, as Black Friday technically is after a holiday, though be it after a holiday the minute the table is cleaned off it is forgotten about. (Sidenote: what you just read is probably eighteen times as long as the poem posted, so no excuses now).

A good friend sent me this fancy fun little game on Facebook. I found it rather thought enlightening and felt I must share and hope you will be emboldened to try for yourself.

Maybe it's the craze of a fad? Maybe it's just a rather basic point that makes sense? Maybe, probably, it's the perpetuation and wide reach of tattoo doc shows?
It has become commonplace doctrine that tattoos must must must have meaning to be significant or appreciated. Once a sign of rebellion and individuality, now tattoos are a sign of "fitting-in-ness"; everyone who is everyone has or wants one. Mind you, I find this exciting, as we shall all decorate our bodies up, mar or scar the skin, look exhilarated in the coming down...
I bring this wonderment up because around half the time I am asked by someone to see my tattoo, it is followed up by what does it mean... This alone is a justifiable conversation piece, but I've noticed it solely occurring since TLC's tattoo docs hit prime time. What is being slowly uncovered here is our endless drive for meaning and symbol. Yes, I see what this means...but what does it really mean... Yet I think the appreciation of art and beauty alone is enough justification as to what the meaning of the tattoo is. What better way to express that love than to let someone else create original artwork on your body, that will endure. True, your input need be heavily weighed and respected, but every minute stroke of the piece need not mean something profound and soul-defining for the wearer.
If nothing else, the tattoo documents the experience. No matter what the ink displays, the senses, the emotions, of the time in your life when the piece was done are wrapped into that ink, time capsuled there forever. Even if it may be a regrettable piece, there's a story as to why it happened. People always argue why get something unless it is of profound meaning as it will be there the rest of your life. But, I say think to that, read a good cliche proverb about the journey, not the destination. The tattoo tells a story, whether or not it is profound. Though in searching through everything surrounding and leading up to letting an artist permanently create on your body, I highly believe you can find something there to make meaning...

I felt I had to share this video because it's a good one and worth a laugh at me. So at the beginning of last fall I began working with a reporter for the school newspaper to film brief podcasts to promote the Student Activities Council and our events. The one that is currently up is the introductory one that we filmed. The edits are random as is the clip order. I think the best part though is that the camera was left running between takes and those cuts where I'm shaking my arms or thinking were left. It's a laugh, take a look...

The Playoff Picture

I rarely watch NBA games, but have been habitually watching the playoffs this year because of Orlando and Denver. These two teams seem a new concept for the NBA- teams with stars, of course, but not made up of the penultimate superstar that scores 50+ points shooting on every other possession. Orlando and Denver play like a team and rely on the logistics of the offense and defense to create.

And now as I watch the finals, I see Kobe Bryant in and out take the ball, hold it, and either score or miss then complain that he was fouled. I by all means respect him as a player and am inspired by his drive, love, and tenacity for the game and pure competition...but...it's boring. There's no sport in the game when, if somehow the Lakers could figure out how to keep three to four of the opposing team's players distracted, they would only need two players on the floor-one to pass the ball in to Kobe, and then he alone could do what he habitually does to score in and out.

This is where my love for college basketball comes from I think, as Coach K puts it, "the fist"; five guys working together as fingers to create the more powerful fist, the fist which wins games as a collective of the team's effort. That's why teams like Orlando and Denver are fun to watch, but have less marketability when it comes to the shoes, the clothes, the merch. Lebron tried to do it, but his big man just wasn't as tall as Gasol to catch and put in that occasional miss. Everyone hyped up the potential Kobe and Lebron match-up, and in essence if that finals scenario went down, might as well have paid to just watch the two play one-on-one for 48 minutes.

Superstar players like Kobe wow the fans night in and night out, are guys you want on your team for the clutch situations, and are first on the list to represent our country for the Olympics, but I feel in the end when players like these are craved for in match-ups, they are better suited for boxing or tennis, something nice and individual.

I believe instant gratification is why divorce rates are so high. No being content, just next steps, just marriage. It's graduation and time to settle down, it's the spotlight has shifted and I crave for it to be back on me. The gold standard wedding three years later, time enough to meet someone and put those maps and plans to work. Fast forward, VCR style, with an irresolute picture, pock marked by film scratches, to late twenties when we can't ride the ship out any longer and need a new spotlight so we sink it, and sink it hard. Show up, dress to impress, a number one stunner, and whatever you get is good enough, we'll work out the flaws and discrepancies in the editing room. But the soundtrack is poor, the sound is all off, and I wonder if I'm what you expected?Are you what you expected to be after all these years?

City Lights Like Movie Tricks

I just saw "Adventureland" and rather enjoyed it.I felt it was for some of the same reasons that I enjoyed Nick and Norah in that it creates this sensational situation that is all movie magic that you underneath know probably won't happen, but it's real enough that it possibly, just, maybe, might... And it makes you search for that girl (or guy) that you want to have a movie moment with and you can envision it. But you think how the city lights cast off the stores in the rain don't actually look like the little circle spots of color, freckles backdropping the spray paint spatters of rain through the tempered glass.And you don't want to be in that situation where you just feel like your insides are permanently out of breath from screwing up and not knowing if you can right the relationship because you'd much rather walk away than stand face to face with that person you screwed up in front of.
Thus, I juxtapose this to the recent ideas of how we just have mas market movies to keep us compacent and content in our ways so that we don't dig below the surface to find that what's supposed to be the penultimate dream is actually gone, stolen and sold for less than its worth by damn thieves.
But if you add the right song, I can't say I care all that much, cause with the right song and the bright lights background, it just feels right.You have that hope that then the person who you picture cast opposite you for the love interest is actually accepting the part. But the lighting isn't quite that well-done, the rain doesn't hit in the right spots, and no matter the angle the little light freckles are more like rays than circles. Save though that it's just the start of summer, and the possibility is always there and it makes you wish you worked a shitty carnival job with awkard friends and new prospects under a black gold sky.See, it all comes down to the right soundtrack I guess.
How it ends though should be like this post I believe.
